DermWireTV: Indiana Gets SUNucated, Dr. Joel Cohen Honored, Rosacea Awareness

Indiana is the first state in 2018 to give children broader access to sunscreen at school through the SUNucation Initiative. The Indiana Academy of Dermatology, with a grant from the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery Association, helped successfully pass the legislation. Joel L. Cohen, MD of About Skin Dermatology in Lone Tree and Englewood, CO will receive the Humanitarian Award at the Melanoma Research Foundation’s Wings of Hope for Melanoma gala this month in Denver. April is rosacea awareness month, and the National Rosacea Society is once again trying to improve education about the condition, its diagnosis, and treatment. More than half of millennials say they don’t trust social media and just 10 percent say celebrity endorsements influence their decision to have a cosmetic procedure, a new ZALEA survey finds.

The American Board of Dermatology has notified the American Board of Medical Specialties it wants to offer a subspecialty certificate in Micrographic Dermatologic Surgery. Dermatologists react. Ilumya or tildrakizumab from Sun Pharma is approved for moderate to severe psoriasis. Medicine the Musical could be coming to off-broadway this fall. And there’s a dermatologist to thank for it. The International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery has updated the terminology of the hair transplantation method known as FUE from Follicular Unit Extraction to Follicular Unit Excision. Cutera introduces two new devices to its laser and energy-based device offerings: Juliet laser represents Cutera’s first entry into the women’s health segment of the aesthetics market; Secret RF is a new fractional radio frequency microneedling device that effectively remodels collagen, improves mild wrinkles, and diminishes scars. MedSpa revenues are growing at a double-digit pace since 2010, and younger generations seem to be driving the boom, a new American Med Spa Association (AmSpa) study shows. Researchers are developing an antibiotic patch that can bypass the gut bacteria and extend the useful lifespan of currently-available antibiotics. DermTech Canada, a licensee of DermTech, has received approval to market DermTech’s Pigmented Lesions Assay (PLA) and non-invasive biopsy kit for the detection of melanoma in Canada.

NRS: New Rosacea Classification; Pediatric Teledermatology; Bleach Baths

There’s a new standard classification and pathophysiology of rosacea from the National Rosacea Society. New evidence shows that virtual diagnosis of pediatric dermatologic conditions is feasible. New research suggests that water baths may be just as good as bleach baths for treating eczema. Researchers say they have discovered specific gene expression patterns in women who appear younger than their chronological age.
