Vit D Levels Elevated in Acne

February 21, 2018

Levels of vitamin D are higher in acne patients, compared to age/sex matched controls. Researchers found a significant inverse relation between level of 25 hydroxy vitamin D and severity of acne vulgaris before treatment, according to a study in Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology.

The study included 90 patients with acne vulgaris and 60 age/sex matched healthy subjects as controls. Patients with acne were treated with 0.75mg/kg/d isotretinoin for three months. Serum level of 25 hydroxy vitamin D were measured at baseline and after treatment.

Results showed that serum levels of 25 hydroxy vitamin D were significantly higher in patients with acne vulgaris than healthy controls. Serum levels of 25 hydroxy vitamin D were significantly increased after isotretinoin treatment in patients with acne vulgaris.

The study authors say further studies are needed to confirm these potential relations.
