What's the Role for Complementary Medicine in Derm

Adam Friedman, MD, Peter A. Lio, MD

“Complementary and Alternative Medicine” (CAM) has become a catch-phrase for all manner of unstudied or not-rigorously-studied interventions. That means it includes promising interventions as well as some questionable ones. Dermatologists can look at the data that are published to find options that may actually benefit patients. When there are low risks and low costs, certain CAM options could be worth pursuing, says Peter Lio, MD. In this edition of Ask an Expert, he stresses that there is high consumer interest in CAM. Patients are looking for options, so dermatologists need to be informed, he tells host Adam J. Friedman, MD.
