Take 5: Summer Skin Care Pearls to Share with Patients
1. Tanning May be Addictive. When talking with patients about the harmful effects of UV radiation, it may be worth mentioning that tanning has been deemed an addictive behavior in young adults. In a new study (Arch Dermatol. 146: 412-417), among anonymously assessed college students, more than half (56.3 percent) had tanned indoors. Of these, 39.3 percent met mDSM-IV-TR criteria and 30.6 percent met mCAGE criteria for addiction to indoor tanning.
2. Choose Make-ups Wisely. A growing number of make-ups—especially mineral cosmetics—promise SPF protection, but patients must keep key facts in mind. For one, only products that contain an SPF on the label offer protection. Second, site of application is important. Unless the make-up is applied to the full face, neck, and ears, patients won't have full UV protection, so a sunscreening moisturizer may still be needed. Patients should apply a sunscreen formulation to all exposed skin first, then follow-up with make-up for added protection.
3. Avoid Combination Products. A number of products combine sunscreens with bug repellents, which may appeal to consumers. But sunscreens should be applied at least every two hours; repellents should not—especially for younger children. Patients may save money and optimize protection in the long-run by purchasing two separate product formulations.
4. Look for UPF. Sun-protective clothing is gaining popularity among many consumers, but some may not know about it. Very few patients may know that a plain white tee-shirt offers minimal UV protection. Many chain and online retailers now carry sun-protective clothing, such as hats, sunglasses, swimwear, and basic shirts and coats. Consumers can look at the UPF (Ultraviolet Protection Factor) rating listed on the tag to find suitable items.
5. Think Beyond Lotions. Some patients may seek added protection from UV exposure. These patients may consider sun-protective supplements, such as DermiHealth PRO, a daily supplement containing antioxidants such as pomegranate extract and astaxathin. When taken on a daily basis, these antioxidants may help neutralize free radicals that may form in the skin due to sun exposure, according to DermiHealth PRO's developer, the Sun Protection Zone. Heliocare (Biopelle) with Polypodium leucotomos or fern extract is an established supplement that offers antioxidant, anti-UV protection.
