ASDS: Study Shows that PCPs Favor Dermatologists for Cosmetic Procedures

10/16/2012

Recent survey data presented at the recent ASDS Meeting in Atlanta and published in the October edition of Dermatologic Surgery finds that almost two-thirds of physicians chose dermatologists as the most qualified to perform cosmetic procedures for wrinkles and skin rejuvenation. Additionally, results show that primary care physicians think dermatologists are better qualified than other specialists to perform skin cancer procedures and other cosmetic procedures. According to lead study author, Dr. Omar A. Ibrahimi, these echoe the unique qualifications of dermatologists to perform these procedures. “Dermatology is the only specialty that focuses on medical and surgical management of the skin,” says Dr. Ibrahimi. “Moreover, many cosmetic and surgical procedures of the skin, such as Lasers, injectable botulinum toxins and dermal fillers, and Mohs surgery, were either developed by or significantly advanced by dermatologists,” he further notes. For more coverage of the study, see the upcoming November issue of Practical Dermatology.
