Support Camp Discovery: Follow Us on Twitter
Practical Dermatology® is excited to announce that we'll donate 20 cents for every new Twitter follower from Jan. 31, 2014 through March 14, 2014* to Camp Discovery. Simply follow @Practical_Derm on Twitter to help support Camp Discovery, which just celebrated 20 summers of camp trips.
Camp Discovery offers a free camping experience to young people ages 8-16 who have chronic skin conditions. Every summer, the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) sponsors six weeks of camp in five locations where campers can experience activities such as fishing, swimming, archery, horseback riding, nature trails, and other fun activities. Camp Discovery offers campers the chance to spend a week with peers who have similar skin conditions. Many counselors at the camp also have chronic skin conditions and provide support and advice to campers. The AAD offers this experience to about 380 children each year.
Because there is no fee for the campers, the AAD relies on volunteers and generous donations from its members, other organizations, and individuals to cover all costs, including transportation. According to the AAD, the success of the camp depends on dedicated dermatologists, nurses, and counselors who volunteer their time to ensure that the medical needs of each camper are met. If interested in volunteering to one of the 2014 camps, the 2014 volunteer application is now available through the AAD's site.
If you have a patient you think would benefit from attending Camp Discovery, fill out a referral form. Eigibility is determined upon recommendation by the child's dermatologist and approval by the Camp Discovery medical director.
