Outrun the Sun Marks 10 Years of Sun Safety Education and Melanoma Research

04/28/2014

Outrun the Sun, Inc. (OTS), a nonprofit organization that has raised more than $1 million in support of skin cancer education and melanoma research, celebrates their 10 year anniversary.

OTS was formed by Anita Day, Jonna MacDougall, Marci Reddick and Jennifer Patton Sarno because they had lost two loved ones to melanoma, only 11 days apart. OTS is dedicated to building national awareness of melanoma and other skin cancers.

Keeter Sechrist, M.D., president of the Outrun the Sun board of directors said, “Traditionally, medical students receive only a few hours of dermatologic training unless they are focused on dermatology as a specialty. We worked with Dr. Lawrence Mark at IU to create a program whereby all students, not only those studying dermatology, would learn how to detect skin cancer. This program involves online, clinic and classroom components and the result is early detection and better patient outcomes.”
