As part of Pathways: Inclusivity in Dermatology, the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD), Janssen, and Kenvue sent high school and college students from diverse communities on a five-day experience in Washington, D.C. to learn about the dermatology field, get tips on how to successfully apply to medical school, practice typical dermatology procedures and receive coaching from mentors.
Launched in 2022, Pathways: Inclusivity in Dermatology aims to increase the number of Black, Latino and Indigenous physicians in dermatology by over 50% by 2027.
As it stands, people of color are 50% less likely than white patients to see a dermatologist for the same conditions – however, this inequity doesn’t only impact patients. When it comes to physician diversity in the field, in 2021 just 68 of the 824 applicants for dermatology residencies in the U.S. were Black or African American and only 62 were Hispanic, Latino or of Spanish origin.
