Arcutis Announces Expert Statements on Genital Psoriasis

05/15/2025

Arcutis Biotherapeutics, Inc. has announced new consensus statements aimed at improving the diagnosis and management of genital psoriasis, according to a company press release.

The 14 statements, developed by a multidisciplinary group of dermatology and immunology experts with the Genital Psoriasis Wellness Consortium, focus on three key areas: physical diagnosis and communication, psychosocial impact, and treatment selection. The effort is intended, according to Arcutis, to provide foundational clinical guidance in an area where formal standards have been lacking. The consensus statements were developed through a modified Delphi process, in which consortium members reviewed 78 relevant publications via PubMed and participated in a multi-phase process that included subcommittee meetings and anonymous surveys prior to finalizing the language.

“Despite affecting an estimated six million Americans, genital psoriasis is often underreported and undertreated due to the uniquely sensitive and private nature of the afflicted areas, and uncertainty about how to begin the conversation,” said Jennifer C. Cather, MD, FAAD, Medical Director of Mindful Dermatology and manuscript co-author, in the press release.

Among the recommendations:

  • A distinct ICD-10-CM code for genital psoriasis
  • Normilization of genital exams early in care to improve diagnosis
  • Integrating standard screening questions capturing life impact into electronic medical records (EMRs)
  • Adopting assessment tools (sPGA-G, DIS, and PHQ-9) in research and practice

“Genital psoriasis can have a major impact on quality of life and the wellness of individuals living with psoriasis," the consortium members concluded. "Increased awareness of genital psoriasis by both health care professionals and patients may improve patient engagement, diagnosis, and treatment.”
