Benzoyl Peroxide 2.6% Cleanser Effective at Reducing Acne Lesions
The cleanser provided effect over a week and at 4 weeks.
A benzoyl peroxide 2.6% (BPO) complexion clearing acne cleanser (CCAC) was effective at reducing acne, a new study reports.
The BPO cleanser was evaluated in a single-center open-label, 4-week study. Participants (aged 18 to 45) had self-perceived sensitive skin and mold-to-moderate acne. The study treatment was applied twice daily in the morning and evening on damp skin, and researchers used clinical grading of lesion counts, photography with and without ultraviolet fluorescence, a patient self-assessment questionnaire, and standard tolerability ratings for outcome evaluation.
According to the results, total lesion counts were reduced significantly by week 1 after cleanser use (-25%; P<0.05). by week 4, lesions were reduced numerically, but this did not reach statistical significance. A significant reduction in porphyrin counts in week 1 was reported (P<0.05 vs. baseline). The treatment was well-tolerated vs. baseline and patients reported satisfaction with the treatment.
“Due to the cyclic nature of acne, fluctuations can be expected,” the authors noted. “Additionally, this 2.6% BPO cleanser was also shown to be very well tolerated and well-liked by subjects with self-perceived sensitive skin.”
