Chicago Dermatological Society to Host Art of Skin Gala to Advance Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion
The Chicago Dermatological Society (CDS) is launching the Art of Skin Gala, sponsored by Janssen Biotech, Inc. The event, to be held June 10, is described as a live, in color celebration of diversity, equity, and inclusion brought to life through the beauty of skin.
The Art of Skin Gala raises awareness and funds to reduce barriers to entry into the dermatology profession for people of color. Of all the healthcare specialties, dermatology has the smallest percent of doctors that identify as people of color.
CDS has partnered with two Chicago nonprofits, Horizons for Youth and High Jump, to provide funding to bring STEM education to youth in Chicago’s underserved communities. It has also created dermatology internships for black and brown medical students.
“Dermatologists are inherently visual people. Our lives are spent observing skin and its nuances. We are very much looking forward to hosting an event that will feature strikingly memorable visual experiences, as well as musical, dance, and culinary delights,” said Jordan C. Carqueville, MD, CDS President.
The entire CDS membership has embraced the push for diversity, equity, and inclusion in the field. Nearly 40 CDS members are serving as brand ambassadors for the Gala, which will seat 400. Additionally, support from industry partners already raised more than $800,000.
Each event sponsor was chosen not just for their ability to provide financial support but for their innovative approaches and commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion. In addition to Janssen Biotech, Inc., and AbbVie, the Art of Skin Gala Sponsored by Janssen Biotech, Inc., has support from partners including Allergan Aesthetics, Amgen, Bristol Myers Squibb, Castle Biosciences, Evolus, Galderma, Genentech, Incyte, Lilly, L’Oréal, Pfizer, and UCB.
Media partners include Black Entertainment Television (BET) and Make It Better Media Group.
