FDA Flags Six Additional Gel Nail Removers for Banned Chemical

The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has identified six additional cosmetic products marketed as gel nail polish removers that contain methylene chloride, a substance prohibited for use in cosmetics, according to a statement from the agency.

The findings stem from the agency’s ongoing surveillance program that periodically tests cosmetic products for safety and compliance. According to the FDA, methylene chloride (also known as dichloromethane or methyl bichloride) may not always be listed on product labels. Methylene chloride has demonstrated carcinogenicity in animal studies and is considered likely harmful to human health. The agency noted that undisclosed presence in cosmetic formulations raises additional safety and regulatory concerns, particularly for products intended for frequent consumer use.
