NPF Update: Group Hosts 25th Dermatology Residents’ Meeting and Research Symposium: A Cure for All

October 8, 2023

This year also marked the first NPF Rheumatology Fellows’ Meeting.

The National Psoriasis Foundation (NPF) celebrated the 25th anniversary of the annual Dermatology Residents’ Meeting on October 7 and 8, 2023 in Washington, D.C.

Experts and co-chairs Brad P. Glick, DO, MPH, FAAD, and Samuel Hwang MD, PhD. hosted the silver anniversary event with 100 attendees selected from 207 applicants representing 72 different institutions in 29 states, Canada, and the Dominican Republic.

“It’s amazing to see how far this event has come since Dr. Mark Lebwohl helped NPF establish the first Residents’ Meeting in 1999,” says Leah M. Howard, J.D., the President and CEO of NPF, in a news release. “This Residents’ Meeting plays a role in driving our mission forward. It is a yearly chance to spend several focused days with the best minds in the field, all looking into the same disease. It's a time of sharing, learning, and addressing conventional thinking. It's a very unique experience that has positive repercussions as a new generation of dermatologists start to take care of the people in this community.”

“What I like most about the Residents’ Meeting after years of participating is seeing past residents who are now physicians and dermatologists,” adds Mark Lebwohl, MD, a past NPF Medical Board Chair and the founder of the Residents’ Meeting. “The bottom line is that we really taught residents how to take care of psoriasis patients, and we continue to do so. The meeting has lasted, and hopefully will last for many years to come.”

Introducing the NPF Rheumatology Fellows’ Meeting

This year also marked the first NPF Rheumatology Fellows’ Meeting, with a focus on treating and managing psoriatic arthritis (PsA). The Fellows’ Meeting is co-chaired by Alice B Gottlieb, MD, PhD and Joseph F. Merola, M.D., MMSc, FAAD.  Meeting attendees are comprised of a full roster of 25 rheumatology fellows selected from 46 applications from 31 institutions in 14 different states.

Resident and fellow attendees had the opportunity to connect with leaders in psoriatic disease and health disparities research from around the world as the NPF Research Symposium: A Cure for All, took place the same weekend.

In related news, the NPF was awarded a 4-star rating by Charity Navigator.

“We are honored to be recognized for our excellent management of the funds entrusted to us by donors around the world,” says Howard. “We know that trust is key. We put people with psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis at the heart of everything we do, which makes it easy for us to show our donors their impact in a transparent and forthright way.”

More than 77 cents of every dollar donated to NPF goes directly to mission-related activities and programs, including the investment of more than $30 million dollars in psoriatic disease research in recent years.

“As a supporter of the National Psoriasis Foundation and other charitable organizations, I turn to Charity Navigator to ensure my investment is being used wisely,” adds Carol Ostrow, the Chair of the NPF Board of Directors. “When you donate your hard-earned dollar to NPF, you can rest assured you are contributing toward the mission to cure psoriatic disease and support all those impacted.”
