Senate Unveils Health Care Proposal
06/21/2017
The newly unveiled Senate Republican leadership’s health care proposal, the Better Care Reconciliation Act of 2017, would roll back much of the Affordable Care Act (ACA).
According to media reports, the 142-page bill calls for:
- Elimination of the individual and employer mandates for having and providing insurance.
- Deep cuts to Medicaid.
- Tax credits based on income level rather than on age, as in the House bill.
- A defunding of Planned Parenthood for one year.
- An additional $2 billion in fiscal 2018 for states to address the opioid crisis.
- A longer phase-out of the Medicaid expansion.
- An end to almost all ACA tax credits.
- An end to tax credits for plans that cover abortion.
Now the Senate must secure 51 votes to pass the legislation. Stay tuned.
