The award recognizes a resident who has achieved a high level of scholarly productivity reflecting the ideals of graduate medical training.

Kayla St. Claire, M.D., M.B.A., a Wayne State University School of Medicine dermatology resident, has won the Peter Svider Memorial Resident Scholarship Award.

The award is presented annually to a graduating resident or fellow in any graduate medical education program in recognition of distinctive achievement in scholarly activities across the entire period of training. The award recognizes a resident who has achieved a high level of scholarly productivity reflecting the ideals of graduate medical training. The recipient receives a plaque and a letter of commendation from the associate dean of Graduate Medical Education.

Dr. St. Claire, who received her medical degree from the University of Illinois College of Medicine, and her masters of business administration degree from the University of Illinois College of Business Administration, is completing her residency at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital in Ann Arbor. She will enter a Dermatopathology fellowship at the University of Chicago in 2024.

She wrote or co-wrote articles in peer-reviewed journals, including the British Journal of Dermatology, the International Journal of Dermatology, Dermatology Surgery, and the Journal of Clinical and Experimental Pathology. She also wrote a chapter on Histology in Taylor and Kelly's “Dermatology for Skin of Color.”

The award is named in honor of the scholarly achievements, clinical excellence and collegiality of Peter Svider, M.D., who completed a residency in the WSU Department of Otolaryngology in 2018. Dr. Svider wrote more than 250 peer-reviewed publications and eight book chapters. He died in 2021 at the age of 34.
