Musely Aging Repair Cream
With Dennis Porto, MD, FAAD
In each issue, Practical Dermatology® magazine spotlights a new product that cosmetic physicians are introducing to their patients. Here, Dennis Porto, MD, FAAD, a dermatologist and Mohs surgeon, talks about some of the benefits of Musely’s Aging Repair Cream.
What is The Aging Repair Cream?
Dennis Porto, MD: The Aging Repair Cream is a novel topical prescription estriol for the face, compounded with other ingredients such as vitamin C, hyaluronic acid, and aloe. Estriol is a form of estrogen, and is the primary hormone produced during pregnancy and is found in the placenta and fetus. Scientists have been able to artificially replicate this hormone in the lab, making it bioidentical. The topical use of estriol can offset the natural decline in estrogen and collagen experienced by women as they age. We’ve found that the topical use of this medicine can plump the skin, restore elasticity, diminish the appearance of pores, and improve dryness and dullness.
How is this product different from other estrogen-based topicals on the market?
Dr. Porto: Musely’s Aging Repair Cream is formulated specifically for the face and is designed to address signs of aging such as fine lines and wrinkles. The vast majority of other estrogen-based topicals available on the market are formulated for a different purpose – to address discomfort or dryness in the vaginal area often associated with hormonal changes, particularly during menopause. While both types of products contain estrogen-based compounds, the vehicle and other compounded ingredients are tailored to meet the specific needs of different areas of the body. We crafted The Aging Repair Cream with a thoughtful approach, aiming to provide a new solution for women navigating the skin changes from aging or menopause. Our hope is not only to ease aging, but to empower women to embrace their confidence and reclaim the essence of their femininity.
Can and how should this cream be used with other skincare products or as part of a skincare routine?
Dr. Porto: Yes, The Aging Repair Cream is an excellent add-on to an existing skincare routine. Since The Aging Repair Cream is formulated with vitamin C, I usually have patients apply this topical cream in the morning, after cleansing and before moisturizer and SPF. I suggest cleansing with a gentle cleanser such as The Cleanser, and using a mineral SPF 30+ daily, such as The Day Cream. The Aging Repair Cream can be used at the same time as retinoids to further boost anti-aging results. The Anti-Aging Cream (similar name, but this is our tretinoin cream) is formulated with tretinoin, hyaluronic acid, and niacinamide to treat fine lines, smooth texture, and fade sun damage. Tretinoin is a well-established and clinically tested ingredient for treating fine lines and wrinkles. Tretinoin works by speeding up the skin cell turnover process, increasing collagen production, and improving skin texture. When paired with niacinamide and hyaluronic acid, it helps the skin maintain a youthful glow. Its formulation ensures consistent and effective results, making it a standout product for anti-aging. When pairing the treatments together, I recommend using The Aging Repair Cream in the morning if using The Anti-Aging Cream at night.
How do you recommend patients use this product?
Dr. Porto: This is how I instruct many of my patients, depending on their specific needs: start by cleansing your face with a gentle cleanser, allowing the skin to air-dry for 2-4 minutes. Next, use upward-lifting motions to gently massage one full pump of the cream onto your entire face each morning. Avoid applying near sensitive areas like the eyes and lips. After application, wash your hands to remove any remaining product and wait 5 minutes before applying a thick moisturizer for enhanced hydration. And of course, work closely with the board-certified Dermatologist that prescribed this medicine to you, as we will guide you during treatment and ensure you are using the medicine safely and effectively.
