In each issue, Practical Dermatology® magazine spotlights a new medication or device that dermatologists are recommending for patients. Here, Jeffrey S. Fromowitz, MD, the medical director and managing partner at Dermatology of Boca in Boca Raton, FL, shares his enthusiasm for Cutera’s next-generation rapid muscle-sculpting device truSculpt flex+.

What is Cutera truSculpt flex plus, and how are you using it in practice?

Jeffrey S. Fromowitz MD: Non-invasive body contouring has become all the rage. Cutera was early to market with the introduction of truSculpt flex as part of their truBody platform. The device uses Cutera’s proprietary multi-directional stimulation for toning, firming, and strengthening. Recently, Cutera redesigned its protocols with the introduction of truSculpt flex plus. The update has decreased treatment times to 15 minutes as opposed to one hour. The new algorithm allows for a rapid and complete session in a fraction of the time.

What sets this device apart from others in the category?

Dr. Fromowitz: The treatment time allows for a more efficient session as well as use of the machine for more patients. In addition, the applicator handpieces have been thoughtfully designed to tailor an exact treatment for each patient. This is anything but a one-size-fits-all applicator as seen with some other devices. What is most incredible is the number of paddles, and in other words, the number of areas that can be treated during one session. Here the advantage is huge as a patient can have up to eight areas treated simultaneously.

Please share your treatment protocol/s and any pearls?

Dr. Fromowitz: The ideal protocol is a series of four to six treatments, done twice weekly. The beauty of the process is all patients can see results. Those who are already lean will see increased definition in muscles and appearance of sculpting and contour. Those with higher BMI will still benefit from the profound muscle stimulation and notice improved strength in the areas treated, most commonly the core. In addition, many combine this treatment with truSculpt id to pair radiofrequency fat reduction with muscle stimulation for a noninvasive tailored approach to body shaping. As with all muscle-based results, maintenance is involved just like going to the gym. We set up a subscription-like model for patients so that there is a cost savings to their ongoing treatments.
