New in My Practice: OTC Skincare/New Products
In each issue, Practical Dermatology® magazine spotlights a new product that dermatologists are recommending to their patients. Here, Corey L. Hartman, MD, founder of Skin Wellness Dermatology in Birmingham, AL, talks about GentleMan’s Blend Body Wash from Old Spice and why he thinks this is a must-use product for every man.
What is GentleMan’s Blend Body Wash?
Corey Hartman, MD: GentleMan’s Blend Body and Face Wash is the latest innovation from Old Spice, a brand that knows what men’s skin needs and what it doesn’t. Crafted to be gentle on skin, this cleanser delivers moisture deep into the skin surface with the combination of petrolatum and pro-glycerin. Free of ingredients like phthalates, parabens, and dyes, GentleMan’s Blend boasts the premium fragrances Old Spice is known for, just a bit lighter so it’s suitable across skin types.
How does GentleMan’s Blend Body Wash stand out from other products in this category?
Dr. Hartman: To my knowledge, this is the only cleanser on the market designed for men that contains petrolatum and pro-glycerin as the moisturizing ingredients. Pro-glycerin has been shown to enhance the penetration of petrolatum in in vitro studies, and petrolatum is the No. 1 dermatologist-recommended moisturizing ingredient. Clinical studies show that with continued use, natural moisturizing factor increases, and the petrolatum in this cleanser penetrates skin at least 10 surface layers deep. That’s what helps deliver the acute and chronic hydration benefits. What’s also unique is that the skin experts at Old Spice formulated such a well-hydrating product that can be used on the face and the body without leaving greasy residue on the skin.
Which patients is this product ideal for? Can women use it too?
Dr. Hartman: This product is ideal for the man who prioritizes self-care and recognizes the role great skin plays in confidently smelling ready for anything. While anyone with skin can benefit from the hydration this cleanser delivers, with so many products on the market for women, let’s let the guys have this one.
How do you suggest that your patients use this product?
Dr. Hartman: I recommend using GentleMan’s Blend Body and Face Wash daily to gently remove dirt and lock in moisture. Whether applied with your hands, a sponge, or a cloth, the gentle exfoliation of that motion helps increase circulation and prepares your skin to benefit from the moisturizing ingredients in the cleanser.
What type of results can men expect with regular use?
Dr. Hartman: The formula was designed to improve skin’s moisture barrier. With continued use, men can expect their skin to look and feel better. Skin’s moisture barrier will be stronger helping the skin stay hydrated, and the skin will go from dry and dull to visibly healthier. Dermatologists know that hydrated skin is healthy skin. Our bodies work better when we are well-hydrated, and the same is true for our skin.
How does skincare fit in with your practice philosophy?
Dr. Hartman: Skincare is core to my dermatology practice. While people should definitely see a dermatologist when they have a concern about the condition of their skin, many common skin concerns can be managed with a good hygiene routine including using a cleanser made with dermatologist-recommended ingredients that penetrate the skin surface like petrolatum.
