On Mentorship, Open- Mindedness, and Fulfillment: A Chat with Dr. Peter Lio

mentorship

Young MD Connect recently hosted a mentorship session with Dr. Peter Lio to learn from a practicing professional in the field of dermatology in a relaxed “Ask Me Anything” setting. Dr. Lio is a clinical assistant professor of dermatology and pediatrics at Northwestern University and the founding director of the Chicago Integrative Eczema Center.

AN INTEGRATIVE APPROACH

Dr. Lio began by sharing his insight on the integrative approach and the importance of advocating for low-cost, low-risk alternatives to improve gut health that can alleviate symptoms seen in eczema. He mentioned a multi-pronged approach, such as using demulcents like slippery elm and licorice to coat and protect the gut. He noted that the Autoimmune Protocol (AIP) diet is also recommended, emphasizing whole, unprocessed foods while minimizing dairy and grains. He highlighted the benefits of systemic treatments—particularly dupilumab, which improves skin conditions and restores gut microbiota— outperforming cyclosporine. Building on this, he also emphasized the fulfillment one gets writing and working with startups as an advisor in developing new treatments, appreciating the innovative discussions outside conventional settings.

He shared with the audience that early in his career, he explored various facets of dermatology, including laser treatments and Botox, before concentrating on his current interests.

ACADEMIC VS. PRIVATE PRACTICE

Later in the session, Dr. Lio was asked about the various career paths for dermatologists, particularly the differences between academic medicine and private practice. Dr. Lio talked about the benefits of gaining academic experience, such as research opportunities and mentorship, which can enhance one’s career. It was a great start for him, he said, and his mentors were incredible and helped shape him. Dr. Lio did caution, however, that academic centers may not be suitable for everyone. Through his personal experiences, going from academia to private practice, he saw more freedom in managing his schedule and his private practice. Acknowledging the challenges of patient care and personal burnout he experienced in years past, he shared (using a humorous quote) that for a specialist, patients can sometimes be more difficult than treating the disease. He then encouraged exploring different paths with the through-line that private practice can provide fulfilling opportunities despite its challenges. Ultimately, he reiterated the importance of making informed choices about one’s career trajectory and being prepared for the evolving landscape of medicine. Starting in academia can be a strategic move before transitioning to private practice for those wanting more flexibility, he said.

SPECIALIZATION

Dr. Lio talked about his journey into specializing in dermatology, particularly eczema, prompted by a mentor’s advice to focus on a niche area. Emphasizing the importance of choosing less popular conditions for specialization, Dr. Lio said this allows for quicker expertise development and better job security. He also shared insights about the evolving landscape of eczema treatments by noting significant advancements over his career, including the introduction of biologics and new topical therapies. He addressed concerns about steroid use, advocating for careful management and the exploration of non-steroidal options such as phototherapy, whole-body cryotherapy, and even wet wrap body therapy (in France) for severe eczema.

Wrapping up the session, Dr. Lio touched on the value of integrative medicine, pushing for an open-minded approach to patient care. He encouraged the audience to participate in product development and to design and create treatments that address patients’ unmet needs. Importantly, he implored the audience to develop their presentation skills—to be prepared and not to be afraid of the evolving change in medicine.
