New in My Practice: Home Device

With Kaveri Karhade, MD

In each issue, Practical Dermatology® magazine spotlights a device or medication that dermatologists are recommending to patients. Here, Kaveri Karhade, MD, a dermatologist at Berman Skin Institute in San Francisco, tells readers how LUSTRE ClearSkin, a new blue light-based home device that can augment in-office acne care.

What is LUSTRE ClearSkin?

Kaveri Karhade, MD: LUSTRE ClearSkin is an at-home blue light device that functions similarly to a traditional in-office blue light treatment for acne but in a more mobile, accessible way. As certain wavelengths of blue light can exert an antimicrobial effect on the skin, LUSTRE ClearSkin can help with mild inflammatory acne.

How does LUSTRE ClearSkin compare to other home-based acne treatments and devices?

Dr. Karhade: As it is not a medication, LUSTRE ClearSkin does not cause the side effects that traditional over-the-counter acne treatments frequently can produce, such as dryness and irritation related to salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide.

How do patients use the device?

Dr. Karhade: In general, the treatments are 20 minutes long with an auto-shut-off feature. The recommended treatment duration is for 12 weeks to see optimum results. Patients can then use the device thereafter when they experience the occasional flare-up.

What results can patients expect?

Dr. Karhade: Blue light therapy may be beneficial for those with mild inflammatory acne. With multiple regular treatments, overall reduction in the number and extent of acne lesions may be seen. Studies using LUSTRE ClearSkin showed a 75 percent reduction in inflammatory acne after 30 days of use and an 80 percent reduction in sebum production and pore size after 90 days of use. Individual results may vary.

Any risks/contraindications?

Dr. Karhade: Patients already using medication (oral or topical) should always refer to their practitioner before using a new treatment. Side effects are minimal, as the device is based on a noninvasive blue light LED therapy and is drug-free. However, a test spot on the arm is recommended prior to treatment as indicated in the manual.
