In each issue, Practical Dermatology® magazine spotlights a cosmeceutical or medication that dermatologists are recommending to patients. Here, James Krell, MD, a dermatologist in Birmingham, AL, shares why he loves (and uses) The Daily 3-in-1 by Get Mr., a 3-in-1 moisturizer, aftershave, and sunscreen that was made with men in mind, particularly those who don’t like the greasy feel of moisturizer and don’t want to be bothered using multiple products.

What is The Daily 3-in-1 by Get Mr.?

James Krell, MD: This product is a face lotion, aftershave, and broad-spectrum zinc oxide-based mineral sunscreen intended for daily use. It is made with an ultra-fine zinc oxide that is well tolerated and does not leave any white hue on the skin after use.

Who should use The Daily 3-in-1 by Get Mr.?

Dr. Krell: I recommend it to ALL male patients who have had a skin cancer during any follow-up skin cancer examination. I also recommend it to females who are looking for a non-sweat, non-chemical sunscreen. In addition, I suggest it to all young men who I see in the office for a variety of skin conditions when I get to the part of the visit where I talk about skin protection and skin cancer prevention. It is particularly great for males because it is absolutely not greasy. It is made with ultra-lightweight zinc oxide and works perfectly on oily skin as well as normal or dry skin. It goes on smoothly and is very easy to use after shaving.

How do you tell patients to use this product?

Dr. Krell: I tell patients to use it like I use it: Every day. I recommend applying it after shaving (if the patient shaves). I suggest one pump (the pump has a very small consistent amount that is dispensed with each pump) for the right side of the face and one for the left side of the face. I tell patients that those two small pumps are usually enough to cover the entire face. For patients (like me!) who do not get outside at all during the day, two pumps for the face is enough to use. I really try to get patients in the habit of putting it on daily. For patients who work outside, I suggest adding extra pumps for the ears, the neck, and the back of the hands. I absolutely encourage patients to make this sunscreen a daily habit and not to miss any days. I encourage patients to make the use of Get Mr. daily, even if they are not going to be outside so that it becomes part of their daily routine.

What results are your patients seeing with regular use of Get Mr. Daily?

Dr. Krell: Most men don’t like to use moisturizers on their face. They also care about the sunscreen dripping into their eyes. In both situations, patients find Get Mr. perfect for them. It doesn’t feel greasy and I get no complaints about it dripping into their eyes when they exercise.

How does it compare to similar products?

Dr. Krell: It is great for travel and meets the size for airline carry-on travel. Some other sunblocks also fit this need. In addition to the great formula that doesn’t cause greasiness and does prevent sunburn, it has a perfect pump dispenser. Many other sunscreens that I have tried have a poor spout for pouring and there is often wasted product. This never happens with Get Mr. I have tried many sunblocks supposedly made for men and none have as high a concentration of zinc oxide. Get Mr. has 18.75%, and few that I have tried are as sheer and non-greasy. It’s really the perfect sunscreen for me and that is why I recommend it to all male patients (and to some females). Many of my female employees routinely purchase for their sons and husbands.

There’s no more picking, squeezing, or popping zits thanks to the rising popularity of pore vacuuming, the use of a device to clean out pores. These TikTok-famous devices claim to extract the dirt, debris, and sebum that can clog pores and cause blackheads. Different pore vacuums come with different bells and whistles, such as magnifying glasses, steamers, spinning crystal heads to exfoliate skin, and/or multiple tips.

They sound highly appealing, but it’s user beware when it comes to pore vacuums and pore vacuuming, cautions Jeanine B. Downie, MD, FAAD, director of image Dermatology PC in Montclair, NJ.

The risks of pore vacuuming likely outweigh any potential benefits, she says. “It can cause a flare of rosacea, acne, or eczema,” she says. If a patient goes too heavy on the suction, bruising and telangiectasias can occur. “Other risks may include infection, scarring, pore hypertrophy, and total inflammation of the skin.”

The bottom line? If a patient is concerned about their pores, there is no substitute for extraction under sterile conditions by a board-certified dermatologist.
