Data Demonstrate Efficacy of a PFD Patch in Tattoo Removal
Results of a clinical study evaluating the potential role of a Perfluorodecalin (PFD)-infused gel patch in laser-assisted tattoo removal were presented at the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery (ASDS) Annual Meeting. The study evaluated the DeScribe Transparent PFD Patch as an accessory to laser tattoo removal procedures to increase patient satisfaction by cutting down on the number of treatments needed to fully remove an unwanted tattoo. Use of the patch conclusively demonstrated faster clearance with higher subject satisfaction than conventional single pass treatment. Study participants presented with blue or black tattoos and were treated with a standard Q-switched Alexandrite laser at maximum tolerable fluence. A single laser pass was delivered on the control side without the DeScribe patch, yet four passes were routinely achievable if the PFD Patch was used. The study found that the majority of subjects showed accelerated clearing on the patch side of the tattoo, and preferred the patch-treated side versus the control. Additionally, no adverse events were observed.
Novel Dual-Wavelength, Nd:YAG, Picosecond-domain Laser Safely and Effectively Removes Multicolor Tattoos
Research published in the September 2015 issue of Lasers in Surgery and Medicine (LSM), evaluated 21 tattooed subjects between the ages of 19-55 who had a total of 31 tattoos treated using a commercial picosecond-domain laser to determine the effectiveness verses the standard Q-switch laser. The average clearance overall as evaluated by blinded observers evaluating randomized digital photographs was 79 ± 0.9% (mean ± sem) after an average of 6.5 treatments. Of the 31 tattoos completing treatment, six had evidence of mild hyper- or hypo-pigmentation by evaluation of photographs. The researcher concluded that the 350 picosecond, 532 nm, and 450 picosecond 1,064 nm Nd:YAG laser is safe and effective for removing decorative tattoos.
