STUDY: Body Contouring Megasessions

While the field of noninvasive body contouring is booming, Diane Duncan, MD, FACS of Plastic Surgical Associates in Fort Collins, CO, author a new study on the topic, notes that some patients have questioned the value of these procedures when the benefit is modest and the time devoted to treatments is significant. She conducted an eight-patient mini-study (Journal of Drugs in Dermatology) to see if two or three “megasessions” could be substituted for eight weekly sessions of bipolar radiofrequency based fat reduction treatments (using InMode’s BodyFX device). Patients were randomized into a two- or three-session group. Each patient was treated for two hours per session, using the Body FX, more superficial Mini FX, and the Deep FX device in an effort to treat on a multilevel basis. Preoperative 2D and 3D Vectra photos were taken, and were repeated and and three months post-treatment. Volumetric analysis and patient assessment showed similar results with a two or three treatment “megasession” protocol when compared with the traditional protocol of eight weekly sessions. Dr. Duncan concluded that, although the cohort number was not statistically significant, the photographs and measurements were compelling enough to warrant further investigation of this treatment protocol.
