Rhode Skin with Dhaval Bhanusali, MD, FAA

In each issue, Practical Dermatology® magazine spotlights a new medication or product that dermatologists are recommending to their patients. This year, lots of celebs got into the skincare game, putting their name and or face on a host of products. Here, Dhaval Bhanusali, MD, FAAD, a dermatologist at Hudson Dermatology and Laser Surgery, discusses Hailey Bieber’s Rhode Skin product line, which he helped create.

What are some of the Rhode Skin’s best sellers?

Dhaval Bhanusali, MD: The Peptide Glazing Fluid is a hybrid gel/cream/serum product. The product features niacinamide, hyaluronic acid, marula oil, and select peptides. It is a lightweight product to help support the skin barrier and is meant to fit within your skincare routine to give you a nice hydrating base. Some use it before makeup or apply it on top as a way to get the “dewy” look that has become popular. For those who need an extra dose of hydration, there is the richer Barrier Restore Cream that has shea butter, squalane, niacinamide, acai, and peptides focused on the skin barrier and hydration. The Peptide Lip Treatment has antioxidants and hydrating actives like shea butter, Cupuacu, and babassu. The idea is to not just help relieve dry lips but support the delicate skin of the lips as well for long-term benefits.

There are lots of celebrity-backed brands out there. Why did you get on board with this brand?

Dr. Bhanusali: The brand’s mission of creating essentials at an affordable price was important to me personally. Improving accessibility has been a large focus of my career and something I am always proud to stand for. Additionally, Hailey’s desire to have advisors as part of the team showed her willingness to value science above all. In this day and age, it’s incredibly refreshing, and it’s been incredible watching her immerse herself in this world and really dedicate herself to learning all aspects of it.

How does Rhode stand out from other skincare brands?

Dr. Bhanusali: In all honesty, I think it’s the brand’s desire to not make outlandish claims and instead focus on creating quality, science-driven products that make it unique. Ingredients like niacinamide and peptides tend to be found in much more expensive products. We were mindful with each formula and looked to create calming, hydrating products that could be used by all skin types (including sensitive skin). It’s been wonderful to see all the positive reviews from the derm community and overall support by so many people out there.

Which patients are the products ideal for?

Dr. Bhanusali: The products were formulated for all skin types, including sensitive skin and even acne-prone skin. It’s important to remember that even if you have oily skin, you need to always care for your skin barrier to minimize the chances of long-term issues.

How do you suggest that your patients use these products?

Dr. Bhanusali: I am having my patients use the Barrier Restore Cream nightly after applying their actives (for example, after retinoids) and the Peptide Glazing Fluid during the day before their SPF. Many parts of the routine are interchangeable, and it’s been fun hearing how patients are utilizing the products in their routines. The lip treatment is a great option for those looking to apply something before an event or even at night as an overnight mask. I have a patient right now who really likes it while she undergoes her Accutane treatment to help with the severely dry lips that commonly occur. The products are meant to help maintain the balance of your skin and keep it healthy and glowy.
