The Skin Recovery Mask With Karen Nern, MD, MBA
In each issue, Practical Dermatology® magazine spotlights a new medication or product that dermatologists are recommending for patients. Here, Karen Nern, MD, MBA, a dermatologist and Mohs surgeon at Epiphany Dermatology, with offices throughout Colorado, and medical director of the Sun Bus, a mobile skin cancer screening vehicle, discusses Elta MD’s latest launch, the Skin Recovery Night Mask.
What is the Skin Recovery Night Mask?
Karen Nern, MD, MBA: The Skin Recovery Night Mask combines chronobiology technology, patented amino acid complex (AAComplex) technology, and antioxidants to strengthen the skin barrier, reduce redness, improve hydration, and give skin a well-rested and radiant glow. The AAComplex is composed of taurine, arginine, and glycine. Chronobiology technology contains lespedeza capitata leaf/stem (bush clover) that helps to support the skin’s natural circadian rhythm by stimulating skin cell regeneration. The mask is noncomedogenic; dermatologist-tested; and free of parabens, dyes, and fragrance. It is suitable for sensitive and acne-prone skin.
How does the Skin Recovery Night Mask stand out from other night masks?
Dr. Nern: It has a unique, patented combination of three amino acids that restores the skin’s moisture content by repairing the barrier, reducing redness, calming the skin, and working with natural circadian rhythms to repair damaged DNA.
Who can benefit from this product?
Dr. Nern: Formulated for sensitive and acne-prone skin, the Skin Recovery Night Mask is appropriate for patients who need extra hydration and redness reduction. It is helpful after sunburn and windburn or to soothe environmentally damaged skin. It is also appropriate after Fraxel (Solta Medical), intense pulsed light, microneedling, or microdermabrasion procedures once the skin has reepithelialized. The mask can also be used after tattooing to keep skin moist once crusting has resolved.
How do you suggest that your patients use EltaMD’s Skin Recovery Night Mask?
Dr. Nern: I tell patients to apply the mask to cleansed skin after retinol and other nighttime skin regimens, including EltaMD’s Skin Recovery System.
What type of results are your patients seeing with regular use?
Dr. Nern: They are seeing increased hydration, reduced redness, and a reduced tendency for sensitivity to retinoids. According to company studies, 85% of users said their skin felt more hydrated after just one use. After 1 week of use, 87% said their skin looked less dull.
How does skincare fit in with your practice philosophy?
Dr. Nern: Skincare is one of the fundamental pillars of great skin. Going without good skincare but expecting great skin is like going out in the rain without an umbrella and expecting not to get wet.

TargetCool has been proven to provide temporary analgesia to the skin for needle-based procedures in aesthetics such as dermal fillers, toxins, and platelet-rich plasma injections to improve patient comfort and reduce pain-related anxiety. With a fragment size of about 1.5 mm, the product can be easily applied in tight or irregular spaces that are not accessible to meshed or unmeshed sheets.
