Dermatologists should integrate interventions into routine prurigo nodularis care by doing things that help the patient to realize they're scratching or picking. The biggest problem is most patients with PN do not realize that they're doing the behavior. They do it when they're under stress, they do it when they're subconscious. There are many new products entering the marketplace that are actually little patches that you can apply to the skin. Applying these patches to an area where someone keeps picking can be a reminder to stop, a reminder that the patch is protective, they can't pick the area. And that type of behavior modification by actually covering the prurigo nodule lesion can be very helpful in retraining patients not to touch those areas, and also that protective coating will allow the prurigo nodule to heal.
